The return of the Portsmouth Royal Band took place at the Memorial Bandstand on Walmer Green on Sunday 12 July. The Bandstand has had an extensive makeover, and was looking pristine and at its best for the concert. Prior to the start, the Green was overflown by two Spitfires and two Hurricanes from the Battle of Britain Flight. The first half was full of great music, suburb solos and a fantastic display by the Corps of Drums. The second half included the rededication service, the laying of wreaths, the ‘Last Post’ and the two minutes silence. On conclusion of the service, the Commandant General, Major General Smith MBE, whom we were privileged to have with us this year, visited our club where he accepted a cheque for £2,000 on behalf of the RMTCF from our chairman Paul ‘Riggo’ Richardson.
Our thanks go to all the members who assisted in the smooth running of the club, either inside or at the entrance, with a special mention to our steward Sue and her merry band of helpers behind the bar. Without all your hard work the day would not have been the success it was.

The annual Service of Remembrance to commemorate VE day, took place at the Burma Star Memorial on a pleasant sunny evening on 16 July. The Burma Star Standard was carried by our Commando Gunner, Mike Conn, with other Branch members ‘ Dusty’, Jimmy and Bob carrying the Branch, GBA and RNA Standards. Our Secretary, Mike Baxter laid a wreath on behalf of the Branch, and on conclusion of the service a buffet reception was held in our club.

Bryan ‘Timber’ Wood has just returned from driving the Support Vehicle to accompany former Royals and friends, with ages ranging from 19 to 61, to raise money for ‘Help the Wounded’, by cycling an epic 300 miles over three countries. Well done lads, with many thanks to Chris Falcke the organiser.
