It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Tony Higgins, former Royal Marine PTI on the 8th April 2020 after a long illness. Tony was also a past Deal Town Sergeant-at-Arms, the C/O of Deal RM Cadets and a RMA branch membership secretary. Members remember ‘Higgy’ as a generous host and stories abound about his exploits within the PT branch, commando units, his love of football and his involvement at the RMA in Deal.
Like most other branches there is very little to report from the last two months due to the ‘lockdown’ in relation to the Covid 19 pandemic. The club doors were closed on Friday 20th March in line with government advice, and branch and club events have either been cancelled or where possible will be rescheduled for later in the year. Confirmed cancellations include the annual ‘Band on the Green’ memorial event in July which encompasses the rededication of the Bandstand, a living memorial to the lives lost and the wounded in the Deal bombing, as well as their family and friends. Both the RMA and the local community will miss this popular event and the way that it brings the town of Deal together as a community.
A branch and club management committee have held virtual meetings via ‘Zoom’ to deal with matters relating to the furloughing of staff and agree essential maintenance work at the club where it has been possible to get workmen and materials in line with current guidance.
