2019 Flag Raising Ceremony

On Sunday 31 March the annual event of raising the new Union Flag on the mast outside the former Officers Mess in the South Barracks housing estate took place at 1100hrs on this the first day of British Summer Time (BST).

Bob Davies, Peter Hall and John Elms represented the Branch and gave the salute as the Union Flag was raised by former Royal Navy man Devrow Jennings, ably assisted by former Submariner John Hardy. Unfortunately we were unable to obtain a bugler this year, but the completion was followed by a round of applause from the many residents and guests who had come along to support this important yearly tradition, a reminder of the history of the place where they live and which keeps the Royal Marines firmly in the public eye.

I remind members once again that for these events to continue into the future, efforts must be made to attend for a few minutes each year or, like much else which has gone already, will be lost forever.
