The 2019 Victory in Japan Service of Commemoration and Remembrance was hosted by the Dover and Deal Branch of the Burma Star Association on Thursday 15th August 2019.
The evening service which commemorated the 74th anniversary of the end of the war in the far east, as well as those lost in Burma during WW2, was held at the at the Burma Star Memorial in the paddock opposite Deal Castle. It was attended by a number of RMA members, service veterans, local dignitaries and a small contingent of the Dover and Deal Sea Cadets. Ten standards were paraded including those of the RMA by ‘Dusty’ Miller and the GBA by Gerry Bowers. A wreath was also laid by the RMA Secretary Archie Houston.
The Service was conducted by the Rev Dr Stephen Edward Young, deputy priest in ordinary to the Queen. The roll of honour was read out by a number of local representatives, and the Kohima Epitaph cited by Peter Wood. Music for the event including the hymn, bugle calls and wartime songs, were provided by the Victory War Time Band under the direction of Steve and Karen Griffiths.
