This years main event for the Royal Marines Association, the Graspan Parade, took place in London on Sunday May 13 2018.
Our Branch was represented at the parade by ‘Dusty’ Miller, ‘Timber’ Wood, Chris Wiltshire and Ben Stones. Also attending as spectators were Marion Maguire and Margaret Murphy.
The weather was fine and fair, and the parade after forming up on Horseguards marched to the Graspan Memorial situated on the Mall, a hundred yards or so from Admiralty Arch. A service of Remembrance and thanksgiving was then held. The parade, led by the Collingwood Band and many RMA Branch Standards, marched down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace and then on to Birdcage Walk for the return to Horseguards where the Salute was taken. A Company from 40 Cdo RM and the City of London RM Cadets also took part.
On completion of the event a reception was held in the Union Jack Club, food and drink was available, and as usual was enjoyed by all who attended.
The Memorial was designed by Adrian Jones in 1903 and commemorates the Royal Marines who died in the Boxer Rebellion in China and the second Boer war in Africa. It was re-dedicated as the National Monument for the Royal Marines in 2000, and was unveiled by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Captain General at that time of the Royal Marines.
