Our two Association Standards, Branch and Green Beret carried by ‘Dusty’ and ‘Timber’ were once again keeping us in the public eye by parading at the Burma Star Memorial situated in the paddock opposite Deal Castle. This annual event took place on the evening of 15 August 18 and is held as a Service of Remembrance by the Deal, Dover and District Branch of the Burma Star Association (BSA) to commemorate VJ Day, and to remember all those lost in Burma during WW2.
There were ten Standards on parade and the service was led by the Rev John Lines MBE chaplain to the Downs Branch of the RBL, assisted by Mr Malcolm Gibbons. In attendance among those gathered on this lovely summers evening were our town Mayor Cllr Nick Tomaszewski and many local dignitaries from Deal, Dover and Sandwich, also attending were many Branch and club members. The music was provided by the excellent Victory Wartime Band and the bugle calls were sounded by our very own CSgt ‘Pastie’ Cornish. Many wreaths were laid including one by Mr Ken Stoker, Burma veteran, and the Kohima Epitaph and the Roll of Honour was read out by Mr Peter Wood, veteran and Chairman of the BSA Branch.
On completion of the service a buffet reception was held in the club, and once again we thank Sue our stewardess.
