This years annual Merchant Navy day service was held on Friday 1 September in Dover town hall at 1100hrs. The service was conducted by the Reverend David Ridley.
Fifteen association standards were present with our Branch Standard paraded by ‘Dusty’ Miller and the Green Beret Association Standard by Jimmy Green.
The closing address was given by Cllr Sue Chandler chairman of Dover District Council.
On completion of this service light refreshments were served in the adjoining Connaught Hall, after which all reassembled at their fine Merchant Navy Memorial situated on Dover sea front for a wreath laying ceremony. A wreath was also laid, as every year, by a representative of the Norwegian armed forces at their nearby Garden of Remembrance.
The MN Memorial remembers the 30,000 Merchant seamen who lost their lives during the second World War, many of whom the sea is their watery grave, and the many in the service who have lost their lives since.
