The annual service to Remember and Commemorate the end of the war in Burma took place as is usual on VJ Day ‘Victory over Japan Day’ on a pleasant summers evening on Tuesday 15 August 2017, and was held at the Burma Memorial, which is located in the grounds of the Paddock opposite Deal Castle.
The service which commenced at 18.30 hrs was led by the Reverend John Lines MBE, the Padre of the Downs Branch of the Royal British Legion. Several local dignitaries attended including our town Mayor, councillor David Cronk, and were among a good turn out of guests, relations of past members of the Association, and former members of the Armed Forces.
There were ten Association Standards on parade with our Branch Standard carried by ‘Dusty’ Miller, and the Green Beret Association Standard carried by Jimmy Green. Also attending to represent the Branch were Capt. Jack McNulty RM, John and Anny Elms, and Bob Davies.
The excellent ‘Victory Wartime Band’ added colour and period songs and music to entertain those gathered before the service, and provided the music and bugle calls for the service.
The Chairman of the Deal, Dover and District Branch of The Burma Star Association, Mr Peter Woods read out the Roll of Honour and recited the Kohima Epitaph, and the Exultation was given by the President of the Downs Branch RBL, Mr Austin ‘Aussie’ Walker MBE.
On completion of the service all were invited to the Royal Marines club where a buffet reception was held, for which we thank our Stewardess, Sue.
When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.
