An Act of Remembrance took place at 1050hrs on Saturday 11th November to give thanks and remember Armistice Day 1918.
The service was held in the Hamilton Road Cemetery at the Cross of Sacrifice and was conducted by the Reverend John Lines MBE padre to the Downs Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL), and attending were members of our town council, members of the public, veterans, the Sea Cadets, and School children.
‘Dusty’ Miller paraded the Branch Standard joining many others and the Parade Marshall was Mr Julian de Zille. The ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ was sounded by C/Sgt ‘Pastie Cornish, the Exhortation was read by Mr Austin Walker, President of Downs RBL, and the Kohima Epitaph by Mr Peter Woods Chairman of the local Branch of the Burma Star Association (BSA). Wreaths laid included the Branch Wreath laid by our President Col David Storey OBE, the GBA by Mr ‘Timber’ Wood, and our Town Mayor Cllr David Cronk.
On completion of the main service Rev Lines dedicated two nearby benches purchased by the Downs RBL, one to the RBL and the other to the Veterans of Deal.
A light buffet was laid on in the club at the end of the event, for which we thank our stewardess Sue.
