This years celebration of our Armed Forces took place at 1050hrs on Sunday 25 June 2017, and was held on the apron of our Pier.
The event took the form of a Drumhead Service and was conducted by The Reverend John Lines MBE, Chaplin to the Downs Branch of the Royal British Legion. The Union Flag, carried by Mr John Lacey was laid across the Drums, followed by the local Branch Standard of the RBL. There were a total of sixteen Standards on parade, with Mr Julian De Zille acting as the Parade Marshall. Mr Austin Walker MBE, RBL Downs Branch President gave the ‘Exhortation’ with Mr Peter Wood, Chairman of the Burma Star Association giving the ‘Kohima Epitaph’.
A good turnout of Veterans, Councillors from Deal, Dover and Sandwich and many local residents took part in the service.
The music was by the Deal Brass Academy Band, who also supplied the bugler for the playing of the ‘Last Post, and ‘Reveille’, and we were well supported by members of our local Sea, Army and Air Cadets.
On completion of the service a short march took place along the promenade led by the Sea Cadet Band and the Union Flag, with the Salute taken by The Deputy Lord Lt of Kent Col Jo Gunnell OBE DL, and this was followed by a reception in the Legion social club.
