This years service of Remembrance to mark the end of the war in Burma took place on VE Day 15 August at the Burma Star Memorial located in the Paddock opposite Deal Castle.
The service started at 1830hrs on a fine summers evening, with ten Standards in attendance. The Burma Star Standard was carried by a very smart army cadet, with the RMA Deal Branch Standard carried by Jimmy Greene. Also attending to represent the Branch were, Capt. Jack McNulty RM, Ben Stones and Bob Davies
The service was conducted by the Reverend John Lines MBE, Padre to the Downs Branch of the Royal British Legion, and the music and bugle calls were provided by the Victory Wartime Band.
A large turn out of Army and Sea Cadets joined the many present to pay tribute to all those who fought and died in the jungles of Burma during WW11.
The Dover and Deal Branch Chairman of the Burma Star Association, Mr Peter Woods read out the Roll of Honour, the Exhortation was given by the President of the RBL, Mr Austin ‘Aussie’ Walker, Mr Jim Thomsett (Burma Star) recited the Kohima Epitaph, and Mr Sid Gibbons (Burma Star) gave a reading.
On completion of the service a reception was held in the Marines Club on the Strand.
