2015 VE Day

A service of thanksgiving took place at Deal’s Victoria War Memorial Hospital on Sunday 10th May 2015 at 1100hrs, to mark the 70th anniversary of Peace and Victory in Europe on the 8th May 1945, ‘VE Day’.
The service was led by Fr. Stephen Young of St Andrews Church, and included a re-dedication of the Book of Remembrance and the Memorial Cross which stands outside the main entrance to the Hospital. Many local dignitaries attended this event including several Mayors and Councillors, and wreaths were laid at the foot of the Cross.
Our Branch was represented by our Vice President Jack Mcnulty, our secretary Mike Baxter, Bob Bale, and ‘Dusty’ Miller who carried the Standard. There were six other Standards on parade including the RNA, carried by Bob Davies, and John Elms had the honour to parade the Union Flag.
Music was provided by The Victory Wartime Band. The Royal British Legion Downs Branch President, Keith Atkinson, recited the Exhortation, and the wonderful 94 year old, Sid Gibbons, a Burma Star Veteran, the Kohima Epitaph.

During the service David Reid, a former Deal town Mayor, gave a short explanation of how when he first moved to Deal he helped to persuade the Council to fund the Book of Remembrance and the erection of the Memorial Cross.
On completion of the service a buffet reception was held in the RBL social club.
