2015 RM Band Visit

The much looked forward to return of the Portsmouth (Royal) Band of HM Royal Marines took place at the Deal Memorial Bandstand on Walmer Green on Sunday July 12th.
The Bandstand, which was built in 1993 as a memorial to the eleven RM bandsmen murdered by the IRA on 22nd September 1989, has had an extensive makeover, and was looking pristine and at its best for the concert.
Numbers attending were slightly down on previous years, due in no small measure to the chilly, damp and windy weather, and also as the men’s final of Wimbledon was being played that afternoon, however the crowd was still estimated at over six thousand!
The pre-concert entertainment was provided by the wonderful Rebecca Robinson who sang alongside the Victory Wartime Band, and shortly before the concerts start the Green was overflown by 2 Spitfires and 2 Hurricanes from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Once again the Band was conducted by Lt Col Nick Grace OBE RM, a regular at Deal for many years, and assisted by their Director of Music, Captain Daryl Powell RM.
The first half concert was full of great music, superb solos, and a fantastic display by the Corps of Drums.
The annual re-dedication service took place during the second half, and was led by the Reverend Seth Cooper, Chaplain to the bandstand, and as usual was very emotional, with the laying of wreaths, the Last Post, and the two minutes silence.
The afternoon ended with the regimental marches, ‘Hearts of Oak’ and ‘A life on the Ocean Wave’.
We were privileged to have with us this year the Commandant General Royal Marines, Major General M L Smith MBE, and the Corps secretariat, Lt Col W Grant RM, who visited our club afterwards, and where the Commandant General was presented with a cheque for £2000 to the RMCTF by our Chairman Paul ‘Riggo’ Richardson on behalf of the Branch and Club.
