2015 Burma Star

The annual Service of Remembrance organised by the Deal, Dover and District Branch of the Burma Star Association was held at the Burma Memorial situated on the Green opposite Deal Castle. This years service was held on Sunday 16th August, and not the 15th, as is usual, because the National 70th anniversary was being held in London, and many members and friends attended that very special occasion.

Our service in Deal started at 1830hrs on another pleasant summers evening, with the Burma Star Standard carried by Mike Conn, with Veteran Sid Gibbons standing alongside keeping a close eye on him! Other RMA Branch members carried the other three standards paraded, with our branch carried by ‘Dusty' Miller, the GBA by Jimmy Green, and the RNA by Bob Davies.
The music was provided by the Betteshangar Brass Band and the service was conducted by The Reverend John Lines MBE. Peter Woods the Burma Star Chairman read out the Roll of Honour, the Exhortation by the Downs Branch President RBL, Keith Atkinson, and the Kohima Epitaph by Jim Thomsett. Sid Gibbons read ‘The Farewell’, from Bunyan’s ‘Pilgrims Progress’.
Among the many wreaths was ours, laid by our secretary, Mike Baxter, and our Vice President Jack Mcnulty laid a wreath on behalf of the George Cross Island Association (GCIA).
On conclusion of the service a buffet reception was held in our branch club.

By the road and the hills lie scattered the seed,
A bamboo cross on each lonely grave, Shimmering silence and jungle weed,
Enfold and touch lightly - here sleep the brave.

Not yet the fruit of your dying be tasted,
The sun and the rain, no harvest unfold;
But rest, we shall see that the seed was not wasted,
The living remember, the tale shall be told.
