2015 Band Bombing Service

The 26th anniversary of the cowardly bomb outrage in 1989 in which eleven talented young musicians were murdered by the IRA, not forgetting the many who were injured, took place at the Garden of Remembrance in Canada Road at 0820hrs on the 22nd September, the date and time that the explosion happened.
The weather for the service was atrocious with extremely heavy rain, but as usual was attended by many families and friends of those killed that terrible day.
Musicians from the Portsmouth ‘Royal Band’ played the music and supplied the Bugler for the ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’.
The service was taken once again by the Rev Jane Walker, the sister of Msn Bob Simmonds, one of those killed. The Roll of Honour was read out by Lt Col Nick Grace, who also laid a wreath. Other wreaths were laid by the families, friends, our town Mayor Adrian Friend, and the branch wreath was laid by our Chairman Paul ‘Riggo’ Richardson. Further wreaths had previously been laid above the name plaques around the Memorial Bandstand on Walmer Green.
On conclusion of the service hot drinks and bacon rolls were available in the RMA club, for which we thank our steward, Sue.
